How to Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Search

The signal that predicts AI citations is not the one most people are optimising for. Here is what the data shows, and the order to work in.

How to show up in ChatGPT and AI search for a small business

The question has changed. For fifteen years the job was ranking on a page of blue links. Now a large share of searches never produce a click at all, and a growing number of people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity instead of Google. So the practical question for a small business in 2026 is not only "where do I rank" but "does the AI know I exist, and will it name me."

Here is the short version: you cannot submit your business to ChatGPT, you cannot pay for placement, and the tools being sold as AI SEO software mostly just measure the problem. What actually predicts whether an AI names you is how often and how clearly you are mentioned by name across the web. That is the whole game, and it is measurable.

What Actually Changed

Two shifts are worth understanding before spending a dollar on any of this.

  • Clicks are drying up. SparkToro's analysis of US Google searches found that in 2026, fewer than one in three searches still sends a click to the open web, up from around 60% no-click in 2024. Roughly half of Google searches now return an AI summary at the top.
  • People are asking AI directly. A McKinsey survey of 1,927 respondents found 44% now say AI is their primary way to search. That does not mean Google is finished, but it does mean a second front has opened.

The consequence for a local business is specific. If someone asks an AI tool for the best pilates studio in Glendale and it names three studios, you either are one of those three or you are invisible for that question. There is no page two.

The Signal That Predicts AI Citations

This is the part that surprises people, and it comes from real data rather than opinion. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and compared various signals against AI Overview visibility.

SignalCorrelationWhat that means
YouTube mentionsr ≈ 0.737Being named in video content was the strongest single signal measured.
Branded web mentionsr = 0.664Being talked about by name, link or no link.
Backlinksr = 0.218 to 0.295Roughly a third as predictive as mentions.

Ahrefs also found that brands in the top quarter for web mentions earned about ten times more AI Overview mentions than the rest. Correlation is not proof, and a brand that gets mentioned a lot is usually doing other things right too. But the direction is consistent and it points somewhere useful: being described is worth more than being linked to. If you want the longer version of that argument, I wrote about whether backlinks still matter in 2026 separately.

Why mentions beat links for AI

Language models do not crawl a link graph the way Google does. They read text. When a model builds an answer about a tattoo studio in Highland Park, what it has to work with is sentences, on forums, in roundups, in reviews, in video transcripts, that name your studio in that context. A bare hyperlink in a directory footer says almost nothing. A Reddit thread where three people name you and say why says a great deal.

The Practical Test

Open ChatGPT and ask it the question your best customer would ask. "Who are the good wedding florists in Pasadena?" See whether you are named. Then ask it directly about your business by name and see whether what it says is accurate. That five-minute test tells you more than any tool subscription, and it tells you which of the two problems you have: invisibility, or wrong information.

What to Actually Do, in Order

For a local business, this is the order I would work in. Most of it is work you should be doing anyway, which is the point.

  1. Get your Google Business Profile exactly right. Categories, services, hours, service area, photos. AI tools lean heavily on structured business data, and an incorrect profile produces an incorrect answer about you. Here is how to set it up properly.
  2. Collect reviews steadily. Reviews are text about your business written by other people, which is exactly the raw material a model uses. Volume and recency both matter. Here is how to ask without being awkward about it.
  3. Write pages that answer one question each. Not brochure copy. A page that plainly answers "how much does X cost in Los Angeles" is quotable. A page that says "we deliver excellence" is not.
  4. Put the facts in plain text. Prices, service areas, hours and answers belong in readable HTML, not baked into images or hidden behind a script that has to run first.
  5. Add schema markup. Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQ markup let a machine extract your details without inferring them.
  6. Get mentioned by name off your own site. Local press, supplier and stockist pages, association listings, community groups, industry roundups, podcasts, YouTube. This is the slow part and the part that compounds.
  7. Keep the site fast and crawlable. If a bot times out, none of the above matters. Here is how to diagnose a slow site.

What Does Not Work

  • Buying "AI SEO" packages that promise placement. Nobody can guarantee an AI names you. If someone offers that, they are selling you rank tracking with a new label.
  • Blocking AI crawlers and hoping to rank anyway. A robots.txt that blocks GPTBot removes you from the source pool. That is a legitimate choice for a paywalled publisher. It is a bad one for a business that wants to be found.
  • Stuffing pages with questions nobody asks. The old trick of publishing forty thin FAQ pages does not survive a model that is summarising rather than ranking.
  • Ignoring your Google Business Profile because "AI is different now." It is not different enough. The profile is still the cleanest structured description of your business on the internet.

The Honest Summary

AI search rewards businesses that are genuinely well known in their niche and clearly described online. There is no shortcut, which is either frustrating or reassuring depending on how you have been doing business. The work is the same work that has always built a local reputation, only now it has a second payoff: a machine repeats it to someone who never visits your site at all.

If you want the foundation right first, the local SEO checklist covers the basics in order, and what makes a good small business website covers the pages themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no submission form and no way to pay for placement. AI tools assemble answers from what already exists about you across the web, so the work is being mentioned by name in the places they read: your Google Business Profile, reviews, local roundups, directories, forums and your own clearly written pages. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks do.

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

It overlaps more than the new acronyms suggest. Fast, crawlable pages, clear headings, real answers to real questions and a correct Google Business Profile serve both. The genuine difference is emphasis: classic SEO rewards links and rankings, while AI answers reward being described clearly and mentioned by name in enough places that a model treats you as the obvious answer.

Should I block AI crawlers from my site?

Not if you want to be cited. Blocking GPTBot and similar crawlers in robots.txt removes you from the pool of sources those tools draw on. Some publishers block them to protect subscription content, but for a local business trying to be found, blocking is the opposite of what you want.

Do I need to buy an AI SEO tool?

No, and I would be careful with the category. Most of what is sold as AI SEO software is a rank tracker for AI answers, which tells you where you stand but not how to change it. The work that moves the needle is unglamorous: reviews, mentions, accurate business data and pages that answer a question properly.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps machines read your page without guessing, which matters more when a model is trying to extract facts quickly. Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ and Product markup are worth having. Schema alone will not get you cited, but its absence makes you harder to use as a source.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Longer than a ranking change and shorter than nobody can say. Mentions accumulate. A business that gets written about locally, collects reviews steadily and publishes pages that answer real questions tends to start appearing within a few months. There is no switch to flip.
